After the Spanish Civil War had drawn to a close in 1939, JOAQUIM
PARDÀS VIDAL, a pork butcher who had been running his own shop
in calle de Santa Eugènia since 1921, decided to build a new
cold meat and sausage production facility by the Pont de la Barca
in what was then the outskirts of Girona.
The architect Ignasi Bosch Reig was entrusted with the project and
he designed and constructed a building that served as a factory, a
shop and a place to live in lending it a modernist feel that it retains
to this day.
In 1942 the factory began producing Fuets, salchichones (dried-cured
pork sausagespork sausage) and butifarras (Catalonian sausage). To
begin with these products were supplied mainly to the local market
although they later became available throughout the region and the
rest of Spain. Twenty years later, his nephew, EMILI CAULA QUINTANAS,
took charge of the factory modernising the facilities and helping
the company to expand its market. Emili’s son, JOAQUIM M. CAULA
PARDÀS, took over in 1976, expanding the original factory and
building a new one alongside it in various phases. In 1989 the company
began to supply markets outside Spain and was awarded an EEC type
approval certificate in 1991. In 1992, the fourth generation of the
family, Joaquim’s sons XAVIER and then EDUARD, joined the company
thereby guaranteeing continuity. Their appointments as Production
and Factory Manager and Sales and Marketing Director allowed the company
to reach new heights and led to two new floors being added to the
new factory. The new facilities – drying rooms and a storage
area – were opened in 1998.. |

In view of the fact that pre-packed
products were becoming increasingly popular and units of sale ever
smaller, the company decided to set up a new sterilised slicing facility
in order to cut its products into slices. The company purchased an
automatic slicer and a thermoform packaging machine and in 2000 the
new slicing and vacuum and modified atmosphere packaging section began
operating. Ever mindful of the fact that quality and stringent controls
are essential factors in today’s market, the company was awarded
ISO 9002 Certification by Bureau Veritas Quality Internacional on
3 August 2001. At Girona Town Hall in 2003 the company unveiled a
project for the construction of a 1,700m2 facility at a site adjoining
the existing factory. The facility is designed to meet the company’s
future expansion needs and to guarantee its continued growth. |
